Butterfly lighting
A method of lighting portraiture that involves aiming the flash downward towards the front of the face in order to produce a characteristic butterfly-shaped shadow under the nose. The harshness of the shadow can be mitigated by using a reflector. This method is also known as "Paramount lighting," after the glitzy portraits that were produced by the Paramount studio in the 1930s.
