Camera obscura
The pre-camera device was used in the early years of human history. It comprised a dark room with a small hole on one side that allowed light to enter. The light then travelled in straight lines to generate an image on the other inverted wall. Portable camera obscuras were developed so that artists and scientists could "copy" natural phenomena beyond the camera's angle of vision.
