Charles Brooks is a New Zealand-born photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. He worked as a professional cellist for about twenty years and held principal cello positions in China and Chile. He also performed for three years in São Paulo. He became a full-time photographer in 2016.
His project Architecture In Music shows the hidden interiors of musical instruments. He makes the images with probe lenses and focus stacking. The project grew out of the pandemic, when concert schedules stopped and workshops held instruments awaiting repair. It is also a hardcover photobook with 134 pages and more than 50 photographs.
His series Parallel Compositions applies the same approach to subjects beyond instruments. His photographs have appeared in National Geographic, Der Spiegel and The Telegraph, among others.
