Darren Smith is a photographer based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He was born in 1984 in Virginia, USA.
His work explores identity, ritual and social environments. Since 2016 he has worked on the series Mayflies. For seven years he built a temporary studio at festivals and events on three continents. The backgrounds were hand-painted in Amsterdam.
His book Mayflies was published by Lecturis in 2024. It has 208 pages and 122 portraits.
Solo exhibitions include Art of Celebration at the National Carnivals Museum in Den Bosch (2025) and x Fireflies at Shetland Arts Centre in Lerwick (2025).
