David Katzenstein is a New York-based photographer whose work has taken him across the world for more than five decades. His photography moves between documentary work, portraiture, street photography, performance, and studies of everyday life, with a continuing interest in people and human relationships. Over the years, he has worked on personal projects as well as assignments for cultural, corporate, and philanthropic organizations.
Katzenstein has published four monographs with Hirmer: Ritual (2022), Distant Journeys (2024), Brownie (2025) and Between One and Another (2026). He is also the managing editor of the Barkley L. Hendricks Photography Archive and a co-author of Barkley L. Hendricks: Piles of Inspiration Everywhere.
Between One and Another brings together 144 photographs made in 25 countries between 1969 and 2026. Designed by Tracey Shiffman, who has designed his books since Ritual, it pairs pictures made years apart, among them two photographs of the same three women in Bhutan’s Tang Valley, taken in 1999 and 2026. He photographed on film with a Leica from 1974 and has worked digitally since 2011. (Website, Instagram)
