Ian Howorth is a documentary photographer based in Brighton, UK. His work deals with identity and culture. He was born in Peru and lived there until he was 12. Then he moved to the United States, and later to England, where he has lived for more than two decades.
He studied media at university and worked as a cameraman for about five or six years. Photography came later, after a friend gave him an Olympus OM-1 film camera.
Howorth has published two books with Setanta Books: Arcadia (2019) and A Country Kind of Silence (2023). The second book explores his sense of identity and belonging in England. It gathers images of faded local signage, shopfronts and other traces of the past. He often does not say where his pictures were taken.
His work has been featured in The Guardian, The New York Times, It's Nice That and Huck.
