Janelle Lynch is an artist, educator and writer. She makes photographs with an 8x10 view camera, and her recent work also includes cyanotypes and film. Radius Books has published three of her monographs: Los Jardines de México (2010), Barcelona (2012) and Another Way of Looking at Love (2018). Her work has been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Shanghai Center of Photography, and is held in collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the International Center of Photography. She was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet in 2019, and the 2024 documentary Janelle Lynch: Endless Forms Most Beautiful is about her work.
She made Another Way of Looking at Love on her property in the Catskills. Over three years, she photographed plants and trees with her view camera, looking for points of connection between them. The book holds 25 photographs in a continuous accordion fold, a shape that recalls the camera’s bellows and a toy accordion her grandfather gave her as a child. She also studied painting and drawing at the Studio School for almost ten years, which she says made her more aware of light.
Lynch teaches at the International Center of Photography. She is represented by Flowers Gallery and lives and works in New York City.
