Joshua Amirthasingh is a photographer based in San Francisco. He grew up in Kolkata, India, and moved to San Francisco in 2017. He says that being an outsider helped his photography.
He works with analog film. He mostly uses Kodak Portra 800 and overexposes it slightly for soft, pastel colors. He often photographs early in the morning, when the streets are empty. His work is inspired by the painter Edward Hopper, cinema and his childhood in India.
His first book is Tales from the City (Nazraeli Press, 2025). It is a quiet, dreamlike look at San Francisco, built around fog and golden hour light. The hardcover has 48 pages and was first printed in 1,000 copies. His photographs have been covered by SF Gate, Colossal and Petapixel.
