Victoria Sambunaris

Victoria Sambunaris is an American photographer. She was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and lives in New York. She earned an MFA from Yale University in 1999.

For more than 25 years she has crossed the United States alone by car, for several months each year. She works with a 5x7 inch field camera and film. Her large photographs show how political, technological and industrial interventions change the American landscape.

Her book Transformation of a Landscape (Radius Books, 2024) covers the past decade of her work. It also includes things she collected on the road, such as maps, road logs, journals and mineral specimens. It follows Taxonomy of a Landscape (Radius Books, 2013).

Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2021 she received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
