William Meyers

William Meyers is a New York photographer and writer, born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1938. After a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, he served as an Air Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1962 to 1965, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and later joined the staff of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Employment, Manpower and Poverty.

He turned to photography in the 1990s and studied at the International Center of Photography. His focus is New York as a city of neighborhoods and working people. The New York Public Library acquired prints from Outer Boroughs: New York Beyond Manhattan and showed them in 2015, the year Damiani published the book. He reviewed photography for The New York Sun from 2002 to 2008 and has written about photography for The Wall Street Journal since 2008.

His book Civics (Apollo Publishers, 2026) brings together 25 years of photographs of civic life in New York, from elections and public meetings to demonstrations, libraries and small acts of public service. It has 111 duotone plates and an afterword by Nicole Gelinas. An earlier selection was shown as Civics at Nailya Alexander Gallery in New York in 2016.
