The golden hour is the short time just after sunrise and just before sunset. The sun is low in the sky, so its light is warm, soft and comes from the side. Shadows are long and contrast is lower than at midday.
It is a favorite time for landscape and portrait photographers. Its length depends on the season and how far you are from the equator. It is not always exactly one hour.
