Image stabilization

A technology that reduces blur caused by camera shake. It is often shortened to IS. Other brand names include VR (Nikon) and OIS (optical image stabilization).

Stabilization can be built into the lens, into the camera body (the sensor moves) or both. It lets photographers use slower shutter speeds by hand. It does not stop blur from a moving subject.
