Multiple exposure

A multiple exposure is a single image made from two or more exposures recorded on the same frame. On film, the photographer exposes the same piece of film more than once. Many digital cameras have a mode that combines several shots in the camera.

Overlapping exposures blend into each other. The bright areas of one image show strongly over the dark areas of another. A two-shot version is called a double exposure. Compare photomontage, where separate images are combined afterward.
