White balance

A camera setting that corrects the color of light so that white objects look white in the photo. Different light sources have different color temperatures. Tungsten bulbs give orange light and shade gives bluish light. Our eyes adjust to this, but a camera needs to be told.

With auto white balance, the camera chooses a setting itself. You can also choose a preset (such as daylight, cloudy or tungsten), enter a value in kelvin, or measure a white or gray card for a custom setting. Most digital cameras and phones offer all these options. If you shoot RAW, you can change white balance later without loss of quality.
