Ephemere

Ephemere is an independent photobook publisher based in Tokyo, Japan. Founded in August 2023 by Anne Murayama, it focuses on meaningful photography, tactile publications, exhibitions, workshops, open calls, and artist dialogue. Its name comes from the French word éphémère, meaning short-lived, and is connected to the Japanese idea of mono no aware, a sensitivity to the beauty and sadness of impermanence.

Ephemere sees the photobook as a physical container for memory. Rather than treating publishing as simple production, it works closely with artists to shape books with rhythm, emotion, and a strong visual identity. The publisher supports different genres of photography, with a special interest in giving non-Japanese artists opportunities to present their work in Japan. Through its publications, Photo Journal, Photo Fest, exhibitions, and community events, Ephemere builds a space for photography that can be held, shared, discussed, and preserved. (Website, Instagram)
