Mark McLennan is a photographer from Calgary, Alberta. He grew up in Southern Alberta. Today he is based in New York City. He lived abroad for a decade before he returned to the American West.
His first monograph, No Fences, was published by Stanley/Barker in 2024. It has 88 pages and comes as a hardback in a slipcase. The photographs were made between 2020 and 2023 in ranching communities between Southern Alberta and West Texas. The project was inspired by 19th-century frontier poetry. It has portraits and landscapes. He shot the work entirely on 4x5 film with Ilford black-and-white film stock.
After the book he photographed oil field workers in the Permian Basin in West Texas. He made most of the portraits at shift change.
