Tsubasa Kawaguchi is a Japanese photographer born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1999. He graduated from Tokyo Visual Arts in 2021 and received the Grand Prix at the second Fugensha Photo Award in 2022. He continues his artistic practice while working at a bookbinding company. His photography explores memory, time, the unconscious, and the point at which deeply personal experiences can begin to feel universal. His work is in the collection of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts.
His debut photobook, Breathless (Fugensha, 2023), moves between two summers. Magenta-toned photographs made with a half-broken camera look back toward childhood and memory, while later colour photographs taken with a new camera record the present. Designed by Satoshi Machiguchi, the 152-page book has an air gap in its binding that gives it a subtle pulse; its Japanese title, Shinzo, means heart. (Website)
