A small lamp on some cameras and flash units that helps autofocus work in low light. Autofocus needs contrast to work, and dark scenes have very little. The lamp lights the subject briefly before the picture is taken. Many flash units project a red pattern of lines, which gives the focusing system clear contrast to lock on. Cameras often use a white or orange light. It is also called an AF assist light.
