Anamorphic lens
A lens that horizontally compresses a scene in order to fit it within the area of the sensor. This allows for the image to be opened up again afterwards in order to capture a scene that is much broader than the sensor could normally do. In the days before the advent of digital photography, anamorphic lenses were extremely commonplace in the film industry.
