Short for charge-coupled device, a type of image sensor. The CCD was invented in 1969 at Bell Labs by Willard Boyle and George E. Smith, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics for it in 2009.
CCD sensors were used in most early digital cameras and in scientific and astronomical imaging. In consumer cameras they have mostly been replaced by CMOS sensors, which use less power and read data faster.
