The light-sensitive chip inside a digital camera that records the image. It does the job that film did in older cameras. The sensor is made of millions of tiny light-sensitive points, one for each pixel.
Most cameras today use CMOS sensors. Older digital cameras often used CCD sensors. A larger sensor usually gives less noise and more dynamic range. See also sensor size.
