The mechanism inside a lens that controls how much light passes through to the film or sensor. It is usually made of thin metal blades that overlap to form an opening. The opening itself is called the aperture. Moving the blades makes the aperture larger or smaller, which changes the exposure and the depth of field. The number and shape of the blades also affect the look of out-of-focus highlights, or bokeh.
