Golden ratio

A proportion of about 1 to 1.618 that has been used in art and architecture for centuries. Many people find shapes built on this ratio balanced and pleasant.

In photography the golden ratio is used as a guide for placing the subject, often as a grid or a spiral laid over the frame. It is close to the simpler rule of thirds, which is easier to use in the field.
