Long exposure

A photograph made with a slow shutter speed, from about one second to several minutes or even hours. Anything that moves during the exposure becomes blurred, while still objects stay sharp.

Long exposures turn moving water into a smooth surface, clouds into streaks and car lights into light trails. A tripod and often a neutral density filter are needed. At night, long exposures also let the camera record scenes that are too dark for the eye.
