Metadata is information stored inside or with an image file that describes the image. Cameras automatically record data such as the date and time, camera model, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and sometimes GPS location. This camera data is usually stored in the EXIF format (Exchangeable Image File Format).
Photographers can also add their own metadata, such as captions, keywords, their name and copyright, often using the IPTC standard. Metadata helps with organizing, searching and protecting images.
