A very thin, flat lens, named for its pancake-like shape. It is much shorter than it is wide. Most pancake lenses are prime lenses with a moderate focal length, but a few are compact zooms. They make a camera small and light, so they are popular for street photography and travel. The thin design often means a slower maximum aperture than larger lenses.
