The process of making images by recording light. The light falls on a light-sensitive material, such as film or photographic paper, or on an electronic sensor in a digital camera. The word comes from Greek words meaning "light" and "drawing", so photography means "drawing with light".
The earliest surviving photograph taken with a camera was made by Nicéphore Niépce in the 1820s. Practical processes such as the daguerreotype followed in 1839.
