Platinum print

A print made with platinum instead of silver. It is also called a platinotype. William Willis patented the process in 1873, and commercial paper was available from 1879.

Platinum prints have a very long tonal scale, soft matte surface and great permanence. They were popular around 1900 but became rare when platinum prices rose during the First World War. Some photographers still use platinum and palladium printing. See also alternative processes.
