Silhouette

A subject that appears as a dark shape without detail against a bright background. Silhouettes happen when the photographer exposes for the bright background, often at sunrise or sunset or with backlighting.

A silhouette works best when the outline of the subject is clear and easy to recognize. The word comes from Étienne de Silhouette, an 18th-century French finance minister whose name became linked to cheap cut-paper profile portraits.
