Shingo Kanagawa

Shingo Kanagawa is a Japanese photographer, born in Kyoto in 1981. He studied at Kobe University and then intermedia art at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he completed an M.A. and went on to doctoral studies.

His work is personal and often autobiographical. His series father, about his father who repeatedly disappeared from home, won the 12th Miki Jun Award in 2010 and was published as a book by Seigensha in 2016.

His book A Bright Room (Fugensha, 2024) follows the years he shared a home with Aya Momose, Reiji Saito and later Taichi Moriyama. Its 118 photographs show apartment hunting, household chores and quiet moments, arranged in the order they were taken, next to a long text by Kanagawa.
