Photogravure

A printing process that transfers a photograph onto a copper plate, which is etched and then printed with ink. The result has very rich, deep tones.

William Henry Fox Talbot made early experiments, and the Czech painter Karel Klíč developed the practical process around 1879. Alfred Stieglitz used photogravures in his magazine Camera Work (1903 to 1917). See also Photo-Secession.
