Claire Garoutte
Claire Garoutte is a documentary and street photographer based in Seattle, Washington. She began photographing in Cuba in 1994 while working on a long-term project about Afro-Cuban religion. Her work explores layered compositions, irony, and scenes that invite multiple interpretations. In addition to her photographic practice, Garoutte is a professor in the Visual Arts Department at Seattle University, has taught at the Photographic Center Northwest and is co-author of Crossing the Water: A Photographic Path to the Afro-Cuban Spirit World (Duke University Press, 2007).
