Alexey Brodovitch

Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971) was a Russian-born designer, art director and teacher. As art director of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958, he changed how photographs were used in magazines, with bold layouts, white space and large, often cropped images.

Brodovitch was also an influential teacher. Photographers such as Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Diane Arbus studied with him. His own photobook Ballet (1945) shows dancers in blurred, grainy images that were unusual for their time.
