Light painting

A technique in which a moving light source is used during a long exposure to draw shapes or to light parts of a scene step by step.

The camera is on a tripod and the shutter stays open while the photographer moves a torch, sparkler or LED. In 1949 photographer Gjon Mili photographed Pablo Picasso drawing with light for Life magazine, one of the best-known examples. See also light trails.
