New Topographics

The name of an exhibition held in 1975 at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, curated by William Jenkins. Its full title was New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape.

Instead of untouched nature, the photographers showed tract houses, parking lots, industrial buildings and roads, in a cool, neutral style. They were Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joe Deal, Frank Gohlke, Nicholas Nixon, John Schott, Stephen Shore and Henry Wessel Jr. The show strongly influenced later landscape photography.
