Düsseldorf School

A group of photographers who studied with Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie (art academy) in Düsseldorf, where Bernd Becher taught photography from 1976. It is also called the Becher School.

The Bechers were known for their typologies: neutral, frontal photographs of industrial buildings shown in grids. Their students include Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Candida Höfer and Axel Hütte, many of whom made very large color prints. See also New Topographics.
