Jan Banning

Jan Banning is a Dutch independent photographic artist based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He was born in Almelo in 1954 to Dutch East Indies parents and studied social and economic history at Radboud University Nijmegen, a background that deeply shapes his work. His photography focuses on systems of power, justice, inequality, and the long-term effects of war, often using thorough research and a typological approach to reveal social and historical contexts. Over decades he has made projects about colonial history, forced labour survivors, government bureaucracy, and criminal justice, and his work has been shown internationally and published widely in books and exhibitions.
