Jan Staller

Jan Staller is an American photographer born in 1952 in New York.
He has been photographing cities, especially Manhattan, for more than four decades.
His work focuses on urban landscapes, construction sites, and industrial materials.

He moved to New York City in 1976 and started photographing the West Side, often at night using artificial light.
Over time, his images became more minimal, focusing on single objects instead of full scenes.
His photographs have been shown in major institutions like MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Staller has published several books, including Frontier New York and On Planet Earth.
His recent work, Manhattan Project, continues his long-term focus on the changing city.
Today, he still works mainly close to home, returning to the same places to find new images. (Website, Facebook, Instagram)
