Janet Delaney

Janet Delaney is an American photographer whose work explores the connections between work, home, and changing urban environments. Her projects often grow from research and interviews, showing how photography can help us understand time and preserve personal and social history. She first became known for her South of Market series about the transformation of San Francisco in the 1980s. She later continued documenting city life in projects such as Public Matters and Red Eye to New York. Her newest book, Too Many Products Too Much Pressure, looks at a week she spent following her father as he worked as a salesman in Los Angeles.

Delaney received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2020 and has been awarded three NEA grants along with a residency from the San Francisco Arts Commission. Her photographs are held in several major collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young, the High Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. She earned her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and taught for many years at the University of California, Berkeley. (Website, Instagram)
