Marshall To
Marshall To is a second-generation Chinese-Canadian photographer based in Calgary, Alberta. Born and raised in Red Deer, Alberta, he grew up in a Taoist household where his family owned a Chinese restaurant and maintained strong connections to traditional spiritual beliefs.
To's interest in photography began with childhood fascination with National Geographic documentaries, which he watched obsessively until his siblings had to hide his favorite VHS tapes. He discovered the photobook world through Chico Review, which sparked his transition from casual animal photography to serious artistic practice.
His work has been shaped by mentors including Jesse Lenz, Igor Posner, Jon Levitt, and Brad Zellar, who encouraged him to embrace rather than hide his cultural background. To's photography focuses on the liminal space between the natural and supernatural worlds, often featuring nocturnal landscapes and wildlife from his native Alberta prairies.
He works primarily with film photography, drawn to moments he describes as inexplicably charged with emotional resonance that often become apparent only when reviewing contact sheets. (Website, Instagram)
