Masao Yamamoto

Born in Aichi, Japan in 1957, Masao Yamamoto began photographing at the age of 16. He studied oil painting under Goro Saito before choosing gelatin silver print as his primary medium. His work, often compared to haiku for its brevity and focus on small details, draws on his painting background and traditional Japanese compositional principles, particularly the deliberate use of empty space. His subjects range from landscapes and birds to flowers and the human body. He has exhibited widely in Japan, the United States, Europe, Moscow and Sao Paulo, with coverage in the New York Times and major art publications. He lives in Yatsugatake Nanroku, Yamanashi Prefecture, surrounded by forests. (Website, Instagram)
