Mike Taylor

Mike Taylor is a British documentary and social photographer based in East Kent. On his website, he describes himself as “at heart” a documentary humanist photographer, but one who likes to bring strong artistic elements into his pictures in order to tell bigger and bolder stories. His work is rooted in everyday life, public spaces, and the emotional charge of ordinary people caught in revealing moments.

That balance between observation and form also comes through clearly in the interview around his pub football project. Taylor speaks about being drawn to people who become completely absorbed in what they are watching, and about looking for raw emotion and storytelling before technical perfection. He works with self-imposed limits, including one camera, one fixed lens, and a consistent format, using restriction not as a handicap but as a way to see more clearly and work more instinctively.

His recent recognition has helped bring wider attention to that approach. In 2025, his image The Beautiful Game won the Street Photography category in the CEWE Photo Award, after being selected from a very large international field, and images from the project have also been shown at festivals and exhibitions. The same line of thinking later led him to write Click!, an accessible Kindle book about becoming a better photographer through limits, consistency, and practice rather than more equipment.
