About Tosei-sha

Founded in 1984 in Tokyo, Tosei‑sha Gallery operates both as a publisher of photography books and as a gallery space displaying original prints and books. This dual approach reflects their commitment to promoting photography as an immersive art form. Guided by the philosophy of “presenting photography books to the world as a bouquet of art”, Tosei‑sha selects and produces high‑quality photobooks that stand out as curated art objects, not just vessels for images  .

Located in Tokyo’s Nakano district, the gallery hosts exhibitions of artists’ original prints, while the publishing arm produces books for Japanese and international audiences.

Over the years, Tosei‑sha has published notable works representing important voices in Japanese photography. For example, they released Minyō Sanga (2007) and Nagi no hira: Fragments of Calm (2013) by photographer Issei Suda, both highly regarded and associated with awards such as the Domon Ken Award  .

In addition to publishers like Zen Foto Gallery, Akio Nagasawa, SUPER LABO, and others featured on Shashasha, Tosei‑sha plays a distinctive role in bridging gallery‑style exhibitions with high‑end photobook production, enhancing both the visual and tactile appreciation of photographic art. (Website)
