William Meyers
William Meyers is a New York photographer whose work focuses on the public life, streets, neighborhoods, and civic structures of the city. Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1938, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and later served as an Air Intelligence Officer in the United States Navy Reserve. He also worked on the staff of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Employment, Manpower and Poverty, giving him a close view of civic life from inside public institutions.
Meyers began photographing seriously in the 1990s and has since built a long-term body of work around New York City. His previous book, Outer Boroughs: New York Beyond Manhattan, was published by Damiani in 2015, and his exhibitions include Civics at Nailya Alexander Gallery and Outer Boroughs at the New York Public Library. He has also written regularly about photography, including as a critic for The Wall Street Journal. His book Civics, published by Apollo Publishers, brings together 25 years of photographs looking at democracy, public service, and everyday civic participation in New York. (Website)
