Photo essay

A group of photographs, usually with text, that tells a story or explores a subject in depth. The pictures are arranged in a planned order.

The photo essay grew up in picture magazines such as Life. W. Eugene Smith's Country Doctor (Life, 1948) is a classic example. See also sequencing and photojournalism.
