A light modifier that fits over a flash or a continuous light. It is a box made of fabric on a frame. The inside is lined with a reflective material, usually silver or white. The front is covered with a translucent white fabric that spreads and softens the light.
A softbox makes the light source larger, so shadows become softer and highlights become smoother. Softboxes come in many shapes and sizes, such as square, rectangular, octagonal (octabox) and long strip boxes. They are a common alternative to an umbrella and give more control over where the light goes.
