Stop down

To stop down means to make the lens aperture smaller by choosing a higher f-number, for example going from f/4 to f/8. Less light reaches the sensor or film, and the depth of field becomes greater.

The opposite is to "open up", which means choosing a larger aperture with a lower f-number.
