About Fugensha
Fugensha is a Tokyo based publisher and cultural space dedicated to contemporary photography and art. Founded in 2014 by Watanabe Art Printing Company, it grew from a long tradition of craftsmanship in printing and evolved into a creative hub where books, exhibitions, and community meet. Since 2016, Fugensha has operated its own publishing program, producing photobooks, art books, magazines, and exhibition catalogues that highlight both emerging and established voices in Japanese and international photography.
Beyond publishing, Fugensha functions as a gallery, bookshop, and café. This combination allows the space to host exhibitions, events, talks, and book launches that bring photographers and audiences together in a direct and intimate way. The focus is always on the physical experience of photography and the value of printed matter at a time when digital images dominate everyday life.
Fugensha has become an important platform within the Japanese photography scene, known for thoughtful curation and a commitment to high quality printing. Its books often reflect a deep respect for the tactile qualities of paper, ink, and design, reinforcing the idea that a photobook is not only a container for images but also an artistic object in itself.
