North light is the soft daylight that comes through windows facing north. In the Northern Hemisphere, these windows do not receive direct sunlight, so the light is indirect, even and steady through the day. In the Southern Hemisphere, south-facing windows give the same effect.
Painters chose north light for their studios for centuries. Photographers use it for portraits and still life because it is gentle, flatters faces and gives soft shadows.
