A self-portrait, usually taken with a smartphone held at arm's length or on a selfie stick, often to share on social media. The word became widely used in the early 2010s, when phones with front cameras became common. Oxford Dictionaries chose it as its word of the year in 2013. Photographers have made self-portraits since the early days of photography, but the selfie made the practice part of everyday life.
